BU Residence Hall Project has Special Place in Our Hearts

Besides Pavilion’s enthusiastic professional approach, there is also a special pride or emotion sensed when a large project reaches a successful conclusion. One such project that deserves the spotlight for its scope, size and the special people involved, is Boston University’s John Hancock Student Village Residences (Phase II) project along the banks of the Charles River.
The Student Village (more commonly known by the students as “StuVi”) is a large new residential and recreational complex between Buick Street and Nickerson Field. The Student Village was designed with the intention of fostering community and bridging the divide between the eastern and western portions of campus. The second phase of the John Hancock Student Village project represents a big step in the direction of BU's goal of providing housing for students who desire to live on campus. The project was completed last month. The newest residence accommodates 960 residents in two towers – dynamic, premium dorm space affording spectacular views. The 26-story tower is dedicated to juniors and seniors in an apartment-style setting. The 19-story tower houses sophomores, juniors and seniors in dormitory-style suite settings. The new student residents join the 817 students who live in the Phase I residence hall at 10 Buick Street in the Student Village.
Cannon Design of Boston conceived the plans and Walsh Brothers made the project a reality. Pavilion Floors became involved about three years ago under the watchful eye of Senior Account Manager, Paul Kryjak. Paul, a Vietnam vet who served as a Seal and Sea Bee, had been a flooring professional for nearly four decades. Two years ago, he was joined on the project by Gregory Lacasse until his untimely passing at age 58 around this time last year. Paul had been mentoring Lacasse who took the reins of this all-union project and brought it to a successful conclusion.
The carpeting products used were Monterey and Crossley, both produced by the Tandus Group. Resilient base and VCT was also used in the installation. The scope of the work included 324,000 square feet of carpet (nearly 7.5 acres), 90,000 square feet of VCT (or a little over 2 acres) and 100,000 linear feet of vinyl base (or about 20 miles!). Creative Office Pavilion of Boston provided the furnishings for these state-of-the-art residence buildings.
This crown jewel deserves special recognition and congratulations for a job well done to both Cannon Design and to Walsh Brothers, specifically, President and CEO Richard Walsh, Senior Project Manager Mark Lootz, and Senior Project Superintendent Paul Griecci. Finally, a special thanks to Gregory Lacasse of Pavilion Floors for his very special effort.
